Dear Evan Hansen

Last Wednesday, some of our high school students spent their evening at the theatre to go see Dear Evan Hansen, the hit Broadway musical which has been playing at the Artscape for the last few weeks. Dear Evan Hansen is directed by Greg Carvelas and with a leading South African cast.
The musical tells the story of a high school boy who gains much attention after the death of one of his classmates after he claims that they were best friends. The production explores themes of teen mental health including struggles with anxiety and depression which allows for the complex story created Benj Pasek and Justin Paul to take place. Musical numbers such as Sincerely Me, provide comedic relief to the audience while motivating songs such as You Will Be Found, beautifully end off the first half of the musical with the powerful vocals from Stuart Brown and the ensemble leaving the audience enraptured.
It was safe to say that by the end of the night we were left in awe by the production and after a resounding standing ovation, debates soon began amongst the group debating Evan Hansens’ decisions.
I encourage anyone who hasn’t seen the musical to go watch it before it leaves the Artscape this March.
