Year 9 Movie Awards Evening
On Thursday 26th October, the Year 9s and other guests gathered at the Nassau Centre for an amazing evening. Having spent months on their Year 9 movie projects, the students were ready to have their short films screened to an admiring audience. The Movie Project is an annual assignment spanning ICT, Drama and Music. The classes split into groups to write, direct, film and edit their very own short film. Having completed the project myself in Year 9, I can attest to the fun, chaos, panic and hilarity of the whole affair and the undeniable impact it has had on me since. Thursday’s event was designed to showcase and celebrate some of the amazing filmmaking talent we have at ISCT.
After a few hours of setup and hard work, the foyer was looking truly magical: movie posters, gold and silver dangling decorations and shining lights galore. Modelled on proper awards ceremonies, the space was decked out to the fullest. A definite highlight was the red carpet stretching down the stairs, complete with fancy rope barriers.
At 6 o’clock, the doors opened and guests began to arrive. Bit by bit, people strode in dressed their best, and posed for photos in front of the “paparazzi”. Afterwards, they headed inside the venue to take more pictures at the selfie wall or to buy snacks and drinks.
Finally, at 7 o’clock, everyone headed into the theatre and the screening began. First to be screened were three short films from Movie Project alumni – Arin’s film from his year 9 days and his team’s entrance to the 2022 48 Hour Film Project, followed by Retaya and friends’ recent film (nominated for an international award). It was great to see how far everyone has come in the last few years.
Then came the main event: screening all the year 9 movies. I personally thought the standard was very high, and was on the edge of my seat at several films with various horror-esque themes. Awards were presented for many different aspects of filmmaking, with the evening culminating in the big reveal of best film: In the Mirror.
All in all, the evening was a wonderful success, and a huge congratulations to all the year 9s – making a movie is no easy feat.
