The Big Walk: Field of Dreams
It is that time of the year: students are working hard with exams just around the corner. But besides exams, another familiar (and probably more pleasant) event is also lurking around the corner: The Big Walk!
For those that don’t know, The Big Walk is a fun event which takes place every year. All students from Nursery to Year 12 complete a walk around the suburbs surrounding Woodlands Heights. Students in year 3 and up complete a 5km walk, while key stage 1 classes complete a shorter walk.
The purpose of the Big Walk is usually to raise money for the school to improve our facilities and the quality of the school. Last year we raised R74 000 and used it on “nice to haves” for both Woodland Heights and Struben House. This year, however, we have a very bold goal in mind: we want to turn the Woodland Heights sporting facilities in the field of our dreams. And the Big Walk will be the first step towards reaching this goal.
The construction of the field is split into two stages:
Stage one:
We will finish laying the artificial grass on the top field at Woodland Heights
Stage two:
We will make a new multipurpose sports facility on the bottom field. The bottom field will contain two 7-a-side soccer fields, four netball courts, and two hockey fields.
How much do we need?
We already have one million rand sponsored towards this project. As a school, it is now our responsibility to raise the rest of the money. The PTA has already helped us raise an astonishing R55 000, but we are still in need of another R171 688 to reach our target of R226 688.
If every child who participates in the Big Walk raises R350 (or more if possible), then we will be able to complete stage one, and take one step closer to the field of our dreams.
So, how do you help raise money?
Each student will receive a sponsorship form, which they can use to collect money from parents, neighbours, friends, etc. The sponsorship form and the money the child has collected have to be returned to school by Friday 10 May.
If every child in a class raises R350, the class will be rewarded with a pizza and a civvies day to showcase the school’s appreciation for their support.
Let’s all work together to create a school environment we, and the generations after us, will enjoy. Let’s all work together to create the field of our dreams!
