Inter-house Music, Drama and Public Speaking
On the 31st of March, we had our Inter-House Music, Drama and Public Speaking.
We started with the prepared speeches, with juniors having chosen their topic. Aidan spoke for Draco, Alex for Orion and Aisha for Titan. They all did a fantastic job, and Aidan won with his brilliant speech on time management.
Senior improvised followed, with the topic ‘empty vessels make the most noise’. After 10 minutes of preparation, Ben started us off for Orion, then Damien for Titan and Abel for Draco. Ben won with an incredible score of 51/50 for his speech!
Next were the senior’s prepared speeches. They were presented with the topic ‘Food security is a global problem that poses one of the biggest threats to our future’ and had the weeks before the event to write and revise. With Nowethu for Titan, Rebecca for Draco and Mia for Orion, each expanded on the topic in unique and interesting ways. It was a close score, but Draco won.
After reintroducing prepared public speaking this year, I’m sure it’s an addition that will remain in the future.
For the Drama devised, we had some enjoyable, thought-provoking pieces. Beforehand, directors organised rehearsals between school hours to produce a set of brilliant performances from our actors.
Our solo singers/ instrumentalists were Hafsa, Sofia and Rebecca, and they performed a lovely variety of songs, with Rebecca winning for Draco.
Our original pieces were works of art. Jacob performed ‘Draco’s doxology’ on the piano, and we listened to Andre’s orchestral construction and Boji’s lyrical song, ‘I’ll be There’, which won the devised score for Titan.
As the music groups performed, the improvised drama prepared with a miscellaneous set of props and fairy tale theme.
Orion’s re-enactment of ‘Cinderella’ was fantastic, including Max as Cinderella and Jemma as the fairy godmother.
Titan did ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, with an interesting twist on the original fairytale.
Draco’s ‘Three Little Pigs’ made brilliant use of a large cast, as well as the inclusion of the ‘I am your mother’ prompt randomly inserted at some point in each drama act. Draco’s creativity won the improv.
Overall, Orion won the music, and Draco won the drama.
It was a wonderful event, with lots of talent demonstrated. Thanks to the teachers, participants and AV team for making it all possible!
