Liesbeek River Cleanup

The Liesbeek River cleanup is an annual event held by the environmental committee in order to protect the local environment.
Saturday, the 15th of February marked an adventurous morning spent at Liesbeek River in Newlands. From 10:00 to 12:00, students collected micro plastics around the banks of the river. Although not many macro plastics were found, it was still an effective endeavour because of the incredible turn up, including students from the environmental committee, Ms Gowar and Ms Kolesky. The committee was able to fill up a few small plastic bags and quite a few big ones in spite of the fact that the river had been cleaned the day before.
Some interesting finds of the day comprised of wigs, items of clothing, a south african pin, a coin and a high heel!
The river cleanup, in conjunction with the beach cleanups that are annually held, are done in order to spread awareness about the current state of the world and aim to get students involved in the world that they will ultimately lead. River cleanups are an important step in protecting marine life and safeguarding the habitats of freshwater creatures such as frogs, fish and crabs.
The environmental portfolio will continue to hold events like this in future, and we encourage students to continue to participate and help protect the environment around them. Thank you to all those who organised the river cleanup, it was without a doubt a successful day!
