Break Time Concerts
Concert Number 1
The first break café concert of the year took place today on the 9th of February, bringing about a surge of musicality into this month of love! The sunny day that wasn’t sweltering created a relaxed and excited atmosphere as sound checks were being made before the performances. There were 5 performances, each leaving the audience clapping, with smiles on their faces.
We had two Year 3s, Emily (with an incredibly long rest of her name – the European royal families have competition with this one!) and Isla, both who bravely sang at the concert with such enthusiasm. Emily sang Sia’s Cheap Thrills, kicking off the concert with a groove and a grin, the audience matching the song’s beat and spurring on Emily’s sweet vocals. Following her performance, Isla sang Never Enough from The Greatest Showman, and most definitely lived up to the title of that musical. She hit those high notes flawlessly and gave a performance that I surely could never get enough of!
Taking vocals and throwing away the soundtrack, we had Micaela perform a poem; I Need to do my Homework written by Kenn Nesbitt. This was a poem that was probably the biggest callout for every student in the audience. Micaela’s gestural and emotive performance tied in to the poem’s relatability, and really brought the true spirit of procrastination to life. All I can say, and I’m sure many others in the audience would say the very same, is: me too, Micaela, me too.
Following our confident slam poet, we had a trio of singers take the stage and sing with such energy! Damien, Abigail and Mia sang Cover Me in Sunshine, each singing their own lines to show off their vocals, and harmonising with such excitement and hands on their hips during the chorus. This trio took this concert by the storm, an impressive thing to do in the heart of summer and sunshine!
With a rocking end to the concert, Conrad took the stage with his acoustic guitar and played Summer of ‘69, revitalising the energy of the audience that had every audience member clapping along excitedly as he strummed away.
This musical start to the year surely put many into a brighter headspace, I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say that we’re looking forward to the next one and the talent that has to bring!

Concert Number 2
On Friday 16 February, Woodland Heights was treated to a breaktime concert at second break, despite the weather scares from earlier making this concert shorter than usual.
The concert was kept small with only two performers; however, that did not detract from the entertainment at all.
Starting off the concert was Shanie on piano. She played a piece by the band ‘The Neighbourhood’ called Pray. The performance was haunting yet beautiful with the audience being enthralled the whole time.
Next to follow was Kiera also on the piano. To switch things up she went for a mellow jazz piece. The performance was smooth and a great way to finish off the break.
Shout out to Daniel’s entertaining MC skills. Providing brief explanations of the cultural portfolio that works hard to make these break time concerts happen, as well as more information on the upcoming production, he truly kept the audience entertained between performances.
