Sunset Concert 2023
On Friday, 10th March, we had our very first ‘ISCT’s got Talent’ at the annual Sunset Concert. It was a lovely evening with many extraordinary performances.
Our three judges were Mary Visser, Tony Fingers and Robyn Botha.
Mary Visser, our art judge, has numerous solo exhibitions and work displayed at UCT, Oppenheimer & Sons, Sturrock Shipping and HSBC Bank.
Our performance judges include Tony Fingers, a chart-topping EDM producer and lecturer and Robyn Botha, known worldwide for her operatic soprano, singing, acting, and impressive collection of awards.
The art exhibition, saturated with numerous different styles and mediums beautifully executed, was displayed along the railing of the green veranda. There were paintings, carefully constructed magazine cutouts and brilliantly crafted illustrations of symbols and characters.
A lot of time, effort and dedication went into all these works, and in the end, our winners were Max (for Juniors) and Kiara (for Seniors).
Our two brilliant MCs for the night, Nowethu and Danielle, kicked off the show with some special guest performers. Mihle began the concert singing ‘Love in the Dark’, followed by our one-and-only, multi-talented Ms Vunani. We also had a brilliant duet with Bella and Tony before Glee Club did a fantastic performance of ‘Black Bird’ and ‘ISCT’s got Talent’ commenced at 18:30.
There is certainly no shortage of talent at ISCT! We had a range of musical performances, including guitar, piano and vocals, covering everything from classical to pop. In addition, we witnessed a magic act, dancing, acting and track standing – which many of us had never heard of before that night.
Track standing involves maintaining balance on a bike despite being stationary, and Sven managed loops around the small stage, completing wheelies and jumps and sharp turns.
Another highlight was the magic performance: a group consisting of Kieran, Khiran and Connor came up on stage to entertain the audience with entirely unbelievable magic. Pens disappeared into thin air – or off the side of the stage – and Connor performed an incredible in-through-the-nose, out-through-the-ear trick while Kieran wowed the audience with his card prowess.
While the performances went ahead, the year 12s kept boerie rolls cooking at the back, supplying drinks and chips for the crowd.
Unfortunately, load-shedding cut the night short as the lighting and sound system died off suddenly at 20:00. Despite the abrupt end to the fun, the night was a success, with no shortage of talents exhibited.
While there were so many brilliant performances, a winner had to be chosen. Congratulations to Inaya, who received 1st place for her performance of ‘In my Blood’ on the guitar!
Thank you to the AV crew who kept everything running smoothly throughout the show, our renowned judges for attending ‘ISCT’s got Talent’ and the teachers who organised everything.
Again, congratulations to all the performers and Nowethu and Danielle, who were instrumental in making the night as spectacular and entertaining as it was!
