Shavathon
On Friday the 27th of February, ISCT had the first of its two annual major in-school events related to raising awareness for cancer or helping sponsor cancer research. If students brought in R25 with them to school, their small donation would go towards supporting cancer research, and since almost every student contributed towards this greatcause, we were able to raise a lot of money for the foundation.
As well as giving money towards such a worthycause, students were able to dress in civvies if they’d donated their R25, as well as have their hair sprayed in bright colours by the Year 12 students.
More Year 12 students signed up to partake in a public Shavathon, where they sprayed and shaved hair in places like Cavendish and The Waterfront.
Cancer affects one in four South Africans, and so regardless of whether it’s through a family member, friend or even yourself, almost everybody has felt the effects of cancer in some capacity. The annual Shavathon and Sunflower Day are two national events that help raise support and awareness for those suffering with cancer. Since this is something that affects so many thousands of people, it is important that we all play our parts, not only practically by donating money but by learning compassion and generosity through donating our money, and our time and our empathy towards those that are struggling. These are all qualities that students of ISCT display when doing things like participating in functions such as the Shavathon, as well as serving the community by helping out in soup kitchens or food drives, or even signing up to play or read with children in hospital.
Compassion is a quality that is shunned out in a me-centric world. But if everyone does their own little bit to help, the world will most certainly become a better place.
