Year 10 Baby Haven Experience
September 8, the Year 10 class visited the Baby Haven as part of our baby project for PSHE. The trip was organised to not only teach us about what it is like caring and interacting with babies, but also as a showcase of what hardships some face, even so young. Many of the babies our class enjoyed playing with that Friday were unfortunately born into very difficult circumstances and we each got the chance to learn about some of their stories before and on the day.
One of the most important things at the Baby Haven was the importance of privacy for these babies and so we didn’t know much going into the day. We were split into four groups and each took turns visiting the Baby Haven through Friday .
On the day we arrived at the home and got a quick briefing before being told to sanitise, wash hands to not spread any germs to the babies. There were two rooms with babies of varying ages. Everyone in each group was able to hold a tiny baby, or play with some of the older toddlers in their hour slot. As each group went, stories were told about others’ experiences to the people still waiting to go. A sense of anticipation was present in all, while some remained nervous or hesitant, especially upon hearing stories of baby vomit – and there were a lot of them! Despite this, everyone seemed to walk out with a smile on their face, each gushing to others about what their experience was like; even the most unlikely people seemed to enjoy the day. We apologise to any teachers who did not get very focused students that day.
The experience with the babies was truly so amazing and emotional, and there is no doubt that many in our class will be visiting again soon. In fact many people went for the second time the same day because they loved it so much. We thank La Culla for having us all, it was an incredible time.
