Sports Tour
During the Easter holidays, the senior netball and soccer teams participated in a sports tournament in George, each team playing multiple matches over the 6 day period we were away. The tournament was the first of its kind for ISCT, and all of us waited with bated breath until March 24th, wondering what it would be like.
We were all up early to be at school by 5:00 on Sunday morning to try and beat the traffic, hitting the road promptly for the six hour journey ahead. The first day was mainly for travel, with us making several stops for food, a closed-for-renovations spot for lunch and even the elephant sanctuary where we were able to walk with elephants that had been rescued from the overpopulation in our national parks. Immediately once we got to our accommodation at the Eden Technical High School of George, we had team photos and an opening ceremony we unfortunately missed. With matches the next day, we settled in for the evening to get some much needed rest.
The second day of the tour was when all matches started. Both teams were on the bus by 8 for the netball and soccer games – the soccer team starting with two games that day while the netball girls had three. It was quite a shock for us all when we saw just how many schools there were playing. For netball, special thanks to our shooters Kiera, Cara-Claire and Boji who played brilliantly throughout the four quarters, as well as to our captain Patience who kept our spirits up.
Tuesday was a new day for matches with the netball girls having two matches and the soccer team only having one. Many injuries managed to be collected by the teams, with one of the netball centres even having to go to the hospital after a particularly rough match. Despite these setbacks, both teams played their hearts out, defending well to keep scores close. Extra practice was also had at the accommodation to get us ready for our final matches.
The next day was quite unexpected. Overnight the weather had taken a turn for the worse and while the soccer team didn’t have any games on Wednesday, the netball girls had their matches cancelled after observing the dangerous conditions of the courts. To pass the time that day, many spent time watching the rugby on the fields outside before we all went to the mall and movies for a bit of fun. Congratulations to all the soccer boys who got scouted at the ceremony on Wednesday for the Italy sports tour in September.
With the weather cleared up, Thursday was the final day of games for both our tour teams. In the morning a ceremony was held for all the netball girls who got scouted for the international sports tour. Congratulations to them all! The soccer team started their final match early and despite the loss, kept Reddam House on their toes with Michael scoring a brilliant goal in the second half. Well done to the team for their performance on tour! The afternoon saw the girls compete against Curro. The game was consistently neck and neck, but issues of a biassed referee resulted in an unfortunate loss for our team. Despite this, the team and spectators never lost hope once during the match with the atmosphere of the sidelines support leaving us all energised as we left for the beach for some free time and celebration for the end of our tour.
Friday morning we were all up early and on the bus to head back home. For our final activity of the tour we went sandboarding, with everyone participating in races down the dunes. Thank you so much to the school for allowing us the opportunity to go on the George school tour and we look forward to what the sports department does next.
