Year 8 outing to Our Workshop in Langa, Cape Town.
Two weeks ago, the Year 8s at ISCT visited Our Workshop in Langa as part of their learning about recycling and upcycling in Art and D&T. Once we had arrived, we walked through their shop and a hallway made entirely of mosaics and tile art. Each and every one of the tiles was a different colour and shape and all were recycled.
On the outing the Year 8s created art with different recyclable materials.
There were three stations: an embroidery station, where we embroidered our initials into recycled cloth;
a beading station, where we made jewellery by threading beads of different sizes, colours and shapes onto a piece of string which was tied at the end to complete our piece
and finally, a plastic upcycling station, where we cut up old pieces of plastic and “sewed” them together to create a masterpiece.
At each of these stations we could choose what we wanted to make and how we wanted to make it, making our pieces unique. There was an elephant made from a toilet cleaner lid, a trophy made from a plastic bottle and a car made an old water drum!
We met a lot of people from the surrounding area who had recently sold their art (made at Our Workshop) at exhibitions and conventions.
